Branding for food and drink
Great food and drink brands make people hungry before they taste a thing. We create identities, packaging cues and websites that make restaurants, producers and drinks brands feel unmistakable.
Appetite appeal
Bold identity, art direction and tone of voice that make your brand look and sound as good as it tastes.
Built for bookings and sales
Websites with menus, bookings, ordering and ecommerce that your team can update without a developer.
The detail
How food and drink gets chosen
Food and drink is judged on two very different stages. On shelf, a shopper gives your pack a moment next to a dozen alternatives; online, a buyer at a deli, café or retailer reads your story, checks your range and decides whether you are worth a sample. Many producer websites serve neither, with one hero shot of the product, a thin About page and a stockist list that has not been touched since launch.
A food and drink branding agency has to build for both audiences at once: the person who eats or drinks the product, and the trade buyer who decides whether it gets listed.
What the brand has to carry
In this category the brand does a lot of work in very little space. A pack has to show what the product is and why it is better made or better tasting, while leaving room for the information the law requires. That is why we design identity and packaging direction together, testing logo, colour, type and photography at the size of a can, a jar lid or a sachet, not only on a presentation slide.
Provenance needs particular care. Words like "artisan" and "natural" are used so widely that they no longer set anyone apart, so the strongest brands show specifics instead: the farm, the method, the people. Our brand strategy and identity work starts by finding those specifics.
What a food and drink website needs
Product pages for every line with ingredients, allergens, nutrition and serving ideas in readable text, not only inside a pack image.
A direct-to-consumer shop, usually on Shopify, with bundles or subscriptions where the product suits them.
A trade and wholesale section with case sizes, a downloadable sell sheet and a short enquiry form.
A stockist finder your team can update as listings change.
Recipes and serving content that give people a reason to return and give search engines something to rank.
A story page that proves provenance with photography and detail.
For online shops, see our Shopify web design service. If you run a restaurant, café or bar rather than a product brand, our hospitality branding page is the better place to start.
Labelling and advertising rules that shape the work
For England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the Food Standards Agency's packaging and labelling guidance sets out what must appear by law on prepacked food, including the name of the food, an ingredients list with the 14 allergens emphasised, net quantity, a best before or use by date, the name and address of the food business and a nutrition declaration. We design packaging hierarchy around those requirements, and your technical or compliance adviser signs off the final label.
A direct-to-consumer shop carries its own allergen duty. The FSA's allergen guidance on distance selling says customers must be able to see allergen information before they buy and receive it again with the delivery, so product pages need the allergen detail in text, not only in a photo of the back of the pack.
Drinks brands also work within the CAP Code's alcohol rules, which say ads must not appeal particularly to under-18s and that people shown drinking must not be, or seem to be, under 25. Larger producers have a further limit: from 5 January 2026, the less healthy food and drink advertising restrictions bring a 9pm TV watershed and a ban on paid-for online ads for products in scope. The government's summary says they apply to businesses with 250 or more employees that pay to advertise.
Getting found by shoppers and buyers
Food and drink searches split three ways: product searches such as "alcohol-free gin" or "low sugar granola", recipe searches, and trade searches such as "wholesale coffee supplier". Each needs its own page type, so we plan product, recipe and trade pages with clear titles, structured product data and copy written the way people search. Our SEO and growth marketing team can carry the content plan on after launch.
Relevant work
We planned, filmed and edited a testimonial video for Wildfarmed, the regenerative food brand, built around a conversation with its CEO and co-founder, Edd Lees, rather than a script. The challenge was to explain regenerative farming and soil health honestly, without overproducing or oversimplifying it, in content that could be used across channels. It is the same principle we bring to food and drink identity: real detail, told plainly.
How a project with The Think runs
Discovery covers your product, how you sell (retail, trade or direct), your competitors on shelf and your launch or listing dates. We then set your positioning and brand platform, design the identity and packaging direction, and build the website in Framer or Shopify depending on how you sell. We work alongside your printer or packaging supplier for production.
The identity and website are usually ready in 4 to 8 weeks. Packaging rollout then follows your print runs and listing dates. Identity work starts at £4,000, websites at £7,500, and the price is fixed when we agree the scope.
