The detail
What clients look for when they choose a law firm
Most people instructing a solicitor are under pressure: a dispute, a dismissal, a deal deadline or a family matter. They are trying to judge competence and fit quickly, often from a shortlist of firms whose websites all say "experienced, approachable and client-focused". Law firm branding has to give them a better reason to choose than proximity or the first result in a search.
Commercial clients look for evidence of sector understanding and for the people who will actually run the matter. Private clients look for reassurance, clarity on cost and a sense that they will be treated as a person rather than a file. One brand usually has to serve both, which is why positioning matters more than the logo.
What law firm branding needs to do
A strong legal brand makes three things clear: who the firm is for, what it is known for and how it behaves with clients. That might be a regional firm that owns its town, a boutique that does one area of law better than anyone, or a commercial practice that speaks the language of founders. Our brand strategy and identity work pins that down with partners before any design starts.
The identity then has to carry that position across a lot of formal material. In practice that means:
A name and logo that work at small sizes on letterheads, email signatures and bundles, not just on a website banner.
A typographic system that makes long documents, briefings and insights easy to read.
A tone of voice guide that helps fee earners write plainly without losing precision.
Photography direction for partner and team portraits that stays consistent across offices.
Templates for proposals, pitch documents and LinkedIn, where much of a firm's business development actually happens.
Rules every legal brand has to make room for
Firms regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority have fixed information to publish, and the brand should accommodate it gracefully rather than bolting it on. The SRA Transparency Rules require firms that offer certain services, such as residential conveyancing, uncontested estate administration, unfair or wrongful dismissal claims at the Employment Tribunal and debt recovery up to £100,000, to publish price information for them, and every firm must publish its complaints procedure, including how and when to complain to the Legal Ombudsman. Letterheads and emails must show the firm's SRA number and the words "authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority".
Authorised firms must also display their SRA number and the SRA's digital badge, known as the SRA clickable logo, prominently on their website, which became mandatory on 25 November 2019. We design the footer, stationery and email templates so these elements sit cleanly within the identity, and your compliance team signs off the final wording.
Where the brand meets the website
The website is where most prospective clients first meet the brand, so the two are designed together. Practice area pages, partner profiles, insights and a clear route to make an enquiry carry the positioning into every visit. How we plan and build those sites is covered on our law firm website design page.
Search is part of the same picture. Clients search for their problem ("unfair dismissal solicitor", "commercial lease lawyer") far more often than for a firm name, so the brand's language should match the words clients actually use. Our SEO for law firms service and wider law firm marketing build on that once the brand is live.
Signs your firm's brand needs work
Partners describe the firm differently from one another, and clients describe it differently again.
The website, LinkedIn and pitch documents look like they belong to three different firms.
New hires cannot explain what makes the firm different after their first month.
Enquiries arrive for work you do not want, while the work you do want goes to competitors.
How a law firm branding project runs
The first stage is listening: conversations with partners and, where possible, a handful of clients, because how clients describe a firm is often more revealing than how the firm describes itself. Strategy then sets the positioning, name architecture and messaging, and only then do we design the identity and carry it into the website and templates.
A law firm rebrand typically takes 10 to 16 weeks from strategy to launch, because partner consultation and sign-off take time and we plan for them from the start. Brand identity starts from £4,000, with a fixed quote agreed before work begins.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does a law firm branding agency do?
A law firm branding agency helps firms define what makes them different and express it through identity, tone of voice and website design. For legal services, that means clear positioning that builds client confidence and sets you apart from competitors.
Why does law firm website design matter?
Clients research solicitors online before they call. A clear, fast, well-structured law firm website with practice area pages, partner profiles and credible insights improves trust, search visibility and the quality of your enquiries.
Can you work within SRA and regulatory requirements?
Yes. We build review stages into every project so your compliance and risk teams can approve wording, claims and required regulatory information before launch.
Do you rebrand merged or newly formed firms?
Yes. We often help firms bring two or more identities together after a merger, aligning partners around one name, one story and one website, with a clear internal rollout plan.
How can a law firm improve its SEO?
We structure practice area and sector pages around the terms your clients search, such as commercial litigation solicitors or employment law London. Thought leadership content then builds authority over time.
How long does a law firm rebrand take?
Typically 10 to 16 weeks from strategy to launch. Partner consultation and sign-off take time in a firm, so we build engagement into the plan from the start.
